Professor G. Robin South

Professor Graham Robin South has a BSc (Hons), PhD and DSc from the University of Liverpool, UK. A Canadian by naturalisation, his principal area of expertise is in the floristics of benthic marine algae, and he has made major contributions to our understanding of the marine algal floras of Eastern Canada and the North Atlantic Ocean, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands . He has established algal herbaria in Canada (Memorial University of Newfoundland) and in Fiji (Phycological Herbarium, Marine Collections Facility). He has served as Editor of Phycologia, Journal of the International Phycological Society, as well as Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Botany.

Professor South has had a long association with the International Ocean Institute, and was responsible for the establishment of IOI-Pacific Islands in 1993, and IOI (Australia) in 2002. From 2006 – 2009 he was coordinator of the IOI’s Global Training Programme, OceanLearn. He is currently an International Associate and Senior Advisor to the Reef & Rainforest Research Centre in Townsville, Australia (www.rrrc.org.au), is a Director of Oceania Research & Development Associates, Inc. (www.orda.com.au) and is the Vice President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology, Australia New Zealand South Pacific Division (www.imarest.org).

Professor South has published some 282 works, including 128 refereed papers and 11 books. He was Founding Professor of Marine Studies at the University of the South Pacific from 1990-2002, and is currently Visiting Professor at the Institute of Marine Resources, USP.
