Mr. Avinash Singh

Mr Avinash Singh has a BSc and an MSc in Marine Science from the University of the South Pacific. Mr Singh is a Fiji citizen whose principal area of expertise is marine and freshwater aquaculture. His MSc thesis focused on larval rearing of the ornamental marine cleaner shrimp Lysmata debelius in 2004. Mr Singh also received training and hands-on experience in hatchery husbandry techniques of the Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) from the late Dr. Alec Forbes and later worked for a P. monodon hatchery owned by Indian Ocean Aquaculture in Mozambique.

Under the guidance of Dr Timothy Pickering, Mr Singh and hatchery staff also pioneered a commercial hatchery for giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and research focused on larval rearing of Mexican Blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris ) at the Division of Marine Studies, USP. He has key training and capacity on shrimp viral detection using DNA analysis through gel electrophoresis.

Avinash Singh is currently a Fellow at the Institute of Marine Resources, USP. In addition he has been subcontracted to Dairy Farms Fiji (DFF) Aquaculture Unit, Fiji ’s largest freshwater prawn farm as its manager since 2005. The primary infrastructure was established by Viti Corps for culturing Tilapia fish but had been closed for a few years prior to takeover by the new investors. This facility now operates 27 x 3000 sq. mt. ponds and has a production capacity of 24 tons of prawn per annum. A renovated hatchery is currently being established on-site and further diversification into farming of grass carps, tilapia and goldfish are underway. Mr Singh also provides training and consultancy for site selection, development of hatchery and farming facilities.
