Newsounds Oceania - Oceania Centre for Arts and Culture
For ten years the Oceania Centre has been at the forefront of contemporary Pacific Music, under the musical direction of Calvin Rore. Using Pacific sounds and instruments the Oceania Centre has built a strong reputation by producing original and distinctive new sounds for live performance, dance productions, film soundtracks and recordings.
The Newsounds Studio is based at the music department of the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies. The studio exists as an open space to cultivate and nurture the creativity of serious, original, contemporary music which is deeply rooted in the cultures and traditions of the Pacific. The studio is a space of experimentation on the different sounds and instruments that exist in the region, towards developing new ideas and new forms of instruments and sounds.
Since its inception in late 2001, the Newsounds Studio has produced creative works from across the Pacific Region and beyond, through recording and producing music for various CD compilations, music and dance productions and festivals. It has provided opportunities for some musicians to record and produce creative works which would never have been possible in commercial studios. The studio has also been involved in collaborative works in various genres of The Arts including with musicians, dancers, poets and visual artists.
