Insurance Guidelines
USP has a single policy for all Campuses centrally managed by the ‘Risk and Insurance Unit’ located in Suva, Laucala Campus, Fiji.

General Information - Insurance Policies:
- All amounts shown in the policies are in Fijian currency and are payable in Fijian currency. If expenses are incurred in a currency other than Fijian dollars, then the rate of currency used to calculate the amount payable will be the rate at the time of incurring the expense.
- In general: Insurance policies include the Type of coverage, Insured, Territorial limits, Terms and Conditions such as: exclusions, limits and Excess Amount or also referred to as ‘deductible’ (Payment over the excess is paid by the insurer)
- To contain premiums certain policies/coverage includes limits, exclusions and an excess. USP staffs are expected to practice effective risk management and not rely on insurance as the only solution to address risk challenges.
Examples: Manage your department’s Risks
- USP Stolen Property/Items: Enforce policies, controls to avoid property missing/stolen such as; ensure property/items are always secure and never left unattended.
- USP-Owned Vehicles: Operated only by approved drivers. Verify drivers’ license is current/valid, request for a copy of their driving records on a regular basis and retain a copy of documents on file. Approved drivers must comply with ‘USP Owned Vehicle Policy’ and ‘USP Vehicle insurance terms/conditions’
Understanding ‘Excess/Deductible’ and Conditions’
Example: Travel Policy: Stolen Property
Policy covers Portable electronic equipment including laptop computers and mobile phones.
- Excess is $250.00 FJD meaning the insurer will pay over $250.00 FJD up to the Limit specified in the insurance policy.
Conditions/Exclusions:
- Insured Traveler must have taken all reasonable precautions to safeguard the property (Examples: securely locked, not left unattended). Stolen property left unattended will not be covered.
