Prior to being appointed as Head of the School of Education and Professor of Teacher Education at the University of the South Pacific, Steve was Head of the CPD department at Bath Spa University (BSU) since 2002. He introduced the Professional Masters Programme (PMP) at Bath Spa University (BSU) in October 2003 from which active enrolments from teachers and other educators exceeded well over 1000 per annum. From August 2000 Steve previously worked as a professor of educational technology at Sonoma State University in California where he was involved in developing an educational technology digital research project as part of a large funded US Federal initiative, Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to use Technology. Prior to that Steve was appointed for 3 years as a professor of instructional technology at the National Institute of Education in Singapore, which is also part of Nanyang Technological University and was involved in integrating ICT and critical and creative thinking into teacher education. Before May 1997 Steve worked both for St Austell College as an IT lecturer and also part-time for Plymouth University as a module tutor on the Integrated Masters Programme.
Steve is an honorary fellow of MirandaNet, which is an organisation proffering the CPD of teachers through the use of ICT. He is also a life member of the Educational Research Association of Singapore and is a member of BERA, UCET, IPDA and many other professional associations. Steve regularly reviews research articles for Educational Action Research and other international Journals and has introduced the field of Learning & Knowledge Technology based upon the assumptions of critical thinking scaffolds and knowledge elicitation systems. Steve has research interests in action research, e-learning, ICT, systems thinking and international continuing professional development. Currently, he is external examiner for the postgraduate professional development programmes at the University of the West of Scotland and for Faculty Awards at the University of Cumbria. He has been elected Vice Chair of the IPDA and is a Fellow of the Institute for Leadership and Management and the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors. Steve was also permanently appointed as a Teaching Fellow at Bath Spa University.
Steve’s qualifications include a first degree in Applied Physics from the University of Bath (UK) followed by a PGCE teaching qualification from Bristol University (UK). Later Steve completed a PG Dip in Computer Education at Exeter University (UK) followed by a PhD in Human Learning from Brunel University in London. Steve is widely published in books, journal articles and international conference research paper proceedings covering many diverse fields of education including: Educational Technology, Learning & Knowledge Technology, Critical Thinking Scaffolds, Knowledge Elicitation Systems, Instructional Design, Educational Assessment, Professional Development, Educational Leadership, Action Research, International Education, Counselling, Coaching and the emerging field of ‘Living Global Citizenship’.
