Staff Rewarded for Major Publications

The University of the South Pacific rewarded twelve academic staff for their high quality research publications in 2010.

The inaugural presentation of awards was made by the Vice-Chancellor and President of USP, Professor Rajesh Chandra at a special morning tea on 8 June, 2011.

The Vice-Chancellor elaborated that the awards were to celebrate the achievements of authors and to encourage more participation of staff to engage in research.

In congratulating the recipients, Professor Chandra emphasised the importance of research, and said that the University is genuinely interested in promoting research while also fulfilling its commitment towards learning and teaching.

He assured the recipients that the University would continue to provide funding and institutional infrastructure support towards research that is relevant and beneficial to the region.

Highlighting the University’s role in research, Dr Esther Williams, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration, HR and Regional Campuses) pointed out that one of the key outputs of Priority Area 3 in the University’s Strategic Plan 2010 - 2012 is increased quality research publications.

The University adopts the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Australian Business Deans Council’s (ABDC) classification to rank the research outputs of research publications by the academic staff.

This scheme which is administered through the University’s Research Office, commenced in January 2011, and will continue for two years when it will be reviewed.  The University will make further awards in 2011.
