Instrumental analysis consultancy, training and technical services
The Chemistry Department is accommodated in a building complex opened in 1981 and a new laboratory building opened in 1998. There are three large undergraduate teaching laboratories, with adjacent air-conditioned instrument rooms. These are served by a large preparation room and stores. Lectures are conducted in classrooms and lecture theatres around the University campus. The undergraduate laboratories are equipped with all the normal requirements for undergraduate teaching.
Chemistry staff are accommodated in one- or two- person offices directly adjacent to staff research laboratories. There is also a large Postgraduate Research Laboratory and an air-conditioned instrument room accommodating the Department's major instruments. The following instruments are available within the department. Other requirements such as graphite furnace atomic absorption are available by arrangement with the Institute of Applied Sciences.

Subject to the demands of the teaching programme, the Department's instrumentation facilities may be made available for consultancy work. Fees will depend on the type of work involved, number of samples and frequency of work.
From time to time the Department arranges training courses covering the use and maintenance of instruments. Places may be made available for individuals or small groups working in industry, education or the public sector. Additionally, individual training, tailored specifically to your requirements may be offered subject to the demands of the normal teaching programme. Fees are dependant upon the nature and level of training required.
Subject to the demands of the teaching programme, the Senior Technician (Instrumentation) can assist with analytical chemistry and instrumentation problems. Whilst it is not possible to offer a completely comprehensive service for all instruments, routine maintenance, fault finding, calibration and applications advice based on over 18 years experience are offered. Initial consultation is free and advice can often be given by phone, fax or e-mail. Site visits may be arranged subject to availability.
