Bachelor of Education (BEd) Secondary In-Service

Admission Requirements:

To be admitted to a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) a person shall:

  1. have completed the requirements for a USP Diploma in Teaching (Secondary); or
  2. have a Diploma in Education (Secondary) from a Teachers' Training College in the region.

Programme Requirements:

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) consists of 22 courses, including:

  1. two compulsory 100-level courses (UU114 and UU100);
  2. two compulsory 200-level courses (UU114 and UU100); 
  3. an Education major of nine courses, of which two are at 100-level, three at 200-level, and four at 300-level including ED300 Practicum.
  4. a teaching subject major of between six and eight courses; and
  5. sufficient elective courses from a second teaching subject to make up the 22 course total (eight at 100-level, eight at 200-level and six at 300-level)

Courses:

100-level:
UU114, UU100, ED152, plus 1 x 100-level course from the strand given below, plus 2 x 100-level
courses for the intended teaching subject major.

200-level:
UU204, UU200; ED250, ED252; plus select 1 X 200-level course from the strands given below; plus select 2 or 3 X 200-level courses from the teaching subjects given below; plus select 1 X 200-level elective course (preferably ED208) if required to make up a total of eight courses;

300-level:
ED300, ED350, ED319 or ED354; plus 1 X 300-level course from the strand given below; plus 2 or 3 300-level courses for the intended teaching subject major.

Education Strand (select one of the following strands):

Strand 1. Curriculum:
ED153, ED255, ED359.

Strand 2. Educational Leadership:
ED191, ED291, ED391.

Strand 3. Educational Planning:
ED192, ED292, ED392.

Strand 4. Non-formal Education:
ED158, ED258, ED358.

Strand 5. Special and Inclusive Education:
PS101, ED208,; plus ED309 or ED321.

Note:

  1. All students admitted from a USP Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) will automatically be awarded cross-credits for the 14 courses completed for that programme.
  2. All students admitted from other recognised Diplomas in Education (Secondary) will, on application, be awarded cross-credits as follows: ED152, ED153, ED250, plus their selective study course plus 2 X 100 level courses from each of their teaching major (subject to approval of the respective Faculty or School)
