The Institute of Education publishes Directions: Journal of Educational Studies, a refereed journal. We are pleased to announce that this journal can now be viewed on line: http://www.directions.usp.ac.fj/. Pacific Curriculum Network, the bulletin that IOE published between 1992 and 2004, is also available on this website.
Directions: Journal of Educational Studies was first published in 1978 by the Institute of Education at the University of the South Pacific. It is a unique journal, providing an avenue for the publication of essays, research findings, book reviews, conference papers, best practice and critical comments by people involved in the educational sphere in the Pacific region.
A complete Directions index of articles by author is available. Abstracts/summaries of articles from 1993 onwards can also be viewed on this website (go to the Journal abstracts page). Potential contributors can check our Guidelines for Contributors. If you wish to take out a subscription, you can download an order form here, print it, fill it in and send it to us. |
Since 1978, over 350 articles about Pacific education by Pacific educators have been published. These are now available in full text format. Authors include well known Pacific academics and educators, many of whom are current or former USP staff—Professor Konai Thaman, Dr 'Ana Taufe'ulungaki, Dr France Mugler, Professor Rajesh Chandra, Professor Ron Crocombe, Dr Tupeni Baba, Dr Narottam Bhindi, Dr Salanieta Bakalevu, Dr Esther Williams to mention just a few—and staff from CROP agencies, including Dr Helen Tavola.
The articles cover a huge range of topics: AIDS education in Papua New Guinea schools, literacy and children's books in the South Pacific, ethnomathematics, environmental education, curriculum issues, language policies, distance education, Pacific women's issues, Pacific languages and radio in education are just a few examples.
The articles in Directions are an invaluable record of what has been happening in Pacific education for nearly three decades: the trends, the needs, the changes in focus and pedagogy, and the strides forward in many areas. Students taking education courses will now have easy access to all these articles, and the articles will also be of interest to historians, education planners and educators throughout the region.
The digitisation of Directions: Journal of Educational Studies was made possible through the PRIDE Project (Pacific Regional Initiatives for the Delivery of basic Education). The PRIDE Project is implemented by the Institute of Education at USP and is jointly funded by the European Union and NZAID through the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
The digitisation of Directions: Journal of Educational Studies is an important action by the Project to build regional capacity. It is expected that online access to Directions: Journal of Educational Studies will generate improved access to Pacific education articles and increased interest and understanding of Pacific education.
In 2009, Directions will be available on CD and distributed throughout the Pacific region. This will allow those without internet access to have full text access to this important Pacific resource.
The database uses open-source Greenstone software, designed specifically for digital libraries. Greenstone was developed with UNESCO support at the University of Waikato. Software and website development is by DL Consulting and Enlighten Designs.
