OCEANLEARN

The International Ocean Institute (IOI) was founded in 1972 by Professor Elisabeth Mann Borgese as a knowledge-based non-governmental, non-profit international organization devoted to the sustainable development of the oceans. It operates through the activities of its Headquarters residing in Malta and Operational Centres located in 25 countries around the world.

The  IOI-Pacific Islands (IOI-PI) is one of the 25 Operational Centres and it is based at the University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji Islands. It operates under a Memorandum of Agreement with the University and with the Government of Fiji, as an independent international NGO. IOI-Pacific Islands is a cooperative venture with the University of the South Pacific, through its  Division of Marine Studies.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) was established in 1968, and is a unique regional university serving 12 Pacific Island nations (Solomon Islands, Nauru, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Tokelau, Niue and Cook Islands). The main Laucala campus is in Suva, Fiji where IOI - Pacific Islands is also based. The University has an Extension network with centres in 11 of the 12 countries with a student population of about 15,000. Suva is a thriving multi-cultural city of more than 70,000 residents, and is located to the south-east of Fiji's main island of Viti Levu, adjacent to the Suva Lagoon and Barrier Reef.
