IOI-PI addresses the problems of coastal communities in an integrated way with social, economic, environmental and survival aspects all taken into account, in community driven projects that are guided by IOI Centres in co-operation with local NGO's and, when required, in consultation with local and national authorities.

The basic approach involves co-management and sustainable livelihood considerations. The innovative part lies in addressing in a balanced way the links between social, survival, economic and environmental needs.

The impacts on local communities include improved living conditions, increased self-reliance and confidence and the establishment of local community-driven enterprises, e.g. Mari-culture, food processing, tree planting and gardening, and an increased interest in education.

These issues are tackled through a system-wide approach. It is recognized that conservation and management of the sea and the coastal zone is involved as much with managing the people who live in the coastal zone, as well as the coastal resources.

Apart from the development of human resources, the IOI-PI system is involved with issues addressing:

  • poverty eradication;
  • generation of self-reliant development in local coastal communities;
  • resource management;
  • development of eco-friendly technologies and use of traditional environmental knowledge;
  • co-development and co-management with focus on integrated coastal area management;
  • sustainable livelihoods;
  • mitigation of and adaptation to natural hazards, e.g. cyclones, storm-surges;
  • empowerment of developing country communities to manage their coastal and EEZ resources.
