Evaluation of the CS Curriculum in Fiji
Secondary Schools - Symposium
As part of the research methodology a Symposium
of the same title was organised from 27th - 28th
March 2003 at the USP Bure in Suva, Fiji. The
program focussed on sharing the initial results
of the research, collect qualitative data from
the participants, develop recommendations and
incorporate the qualitative data into the final
report. The Symposium was attended by 25 participants
from various tertiary institutes, secondary schools,
donor agencies and USP personnel.
Regional Workshop on ICT in Education
2005
A Regional Workshop on ICT in Education was organised
from 25th to 29th January 2005 at Raffles Tradewinds
Hotel in Suva. The Workshop bought together educators,
policy makers, civil servants, academics and other
relevant stakeholders from Fiji (41), Tonga (2),
Marshall Islands (1), Kiribati (1), Tuvalu (1),
Solomon Islands (1), Samoa (2), Niue (2) and Nauru
(2) to explore their country situation and draft
systematic approaches to address the vision of
implementing ICT education in their schools.
Regional participants prepared their Country
Status Reports on ICT in Education prior to this
workshop which are being compiled together to
form a Regional Status Report on ICT in Education,
this will be revised and published by April 2005.
The major constraints identified as a commonality
among all countries included:
- Hardware facilities: Current infrastructure
cannot meet demands; Maintenance; Isolation
- poor supporting infrastructure.
- Financing IT: High cost of internet, telephone
and electricity; High costs of hardware; Lack
of finance for curriculum development; Maintenance
costs; Lack of finance for general ICT development
in education; Economic crisis at national level.
- HR in ICT: High turnover of ICT teachers;
Lack of ICT experts and teachers.

27th Annual Conference & Exhibition in Hawaii
From 16th - 19th January 2005, Ms. Maki Kato
attended the Pacific Telecommunications Council
- 27th Annual Conference & Exhibition in Hawaii
and presented a paper titled Fiji's Information-economy
and the Role of Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) Literacy Education in the Age
of Broadband arising out of the findings of this
research.
