Message from Dr Robin Mitchell ONOC President

I’m pleased to join Helen to support the ONOC celebration of International Women’s Day 2022 and recognize the tremendous work done by the ONOC Equity Commission.

Previously known as the ONOC Women in Sport Commission, it has under Helen Brownlee’s leadership and guidance achieved many milestones we can be proud of as a Continental Association in the Olympic Movement.

This year, we are celebrating the postponed marking of the ONOC 40th anniversary – we have been engaging in a period of research and reflection to document our four decades of existence. We will be taking this process to our athletes, members, and partners in the coming months as we work toward a book we will launch in October.

08/04/2021

Following consultation with Lakapi Samoa and Tonga Rugby Union, who were due to contest the title, Oceania Rugby announced today the tough decision to cancel the Oceania Rugby U20 Trophy scheduled to take place on Saturday 22 May 2021.

Oceania Rugby Competitions Manger, Wayne Schuster, cited ongoing travel restrictions, relevant government and public health authority advice and continued challenges in guaranteeing the successful hosting of this tournament during the current COVID landscape as major factors in this difficult but appropriate decision.

“Unfortunately rescheduling or postponing this year’s event would also not be realistic under the current circumstances”, said Schuster.

Samoa will retain the Oceania Rugby U20 Trophy title following a 36-3 defeat of Tonga during the 2020 event.

Oceania Rugby continues to adjust the 2021 tournament schedule and looks forward to regional competitions returning when it is logistically possible.

“We will be ready to roll out our 2021 competitions when border restrictions are lifted, and competitions can be held with player, team management and tournament staff welfare our top consideration”, Schuster added.

Exploring the sports economic impact of COVID-19 on professional soccer (2021)

The COVID-19 pandemic has, among other things, a significant impact on the economic situation of sports in general and professional soccer in particular. Our paper points out the main effects of the crisis on professional soccer. To this end, the general effects of the pandemic on sports will be briefly outlined, followed by a discussion of matches played behind closed doors. Based on the general conditions and particularities of the team sports industry, possible solutions for dealing with any problems arising from the pandemic will be discussed from the perspective of economics. As a result, we prefer intra-industry market-based solutions such as a solidarity fund or measures of self-regulation to possible state subsidies.

No sports, no spectators – no media, no money? The importance of spectators and broadcasting for professional sports during COVID-19 (2021)

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic is giving sports a timeout. Due to the risk of infection, in Germany no sports events with live spectators were allowed for weeks starting on March 13. The question arises, what would be the impact on spectators and with that on live broadcasting for different sports? While professional sport leagues like handball and hockey (ice hockey) stopped, the football (soccer) league restarted games without spectators on May 16.

Risk assessment of sports activity and the impact of economic and demographic indicators during the COVID-19 pandemic (2022)

There are a lot countries which use measures to prevent spread of coronavirus infection COVID 19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. But despite of this pandemic continues. Particularities of sports activities include systematic contact with significant numbers of people, regular visits to other countries and cities for participation in competitions. It means sportsmen are in group of increased risk of infection and spread of COVID 19. For safe participation it is important to know measures which are implemented by countries for epidemic control, to study dynamics of indicators, that characterize epidemic process, to investigate effectiveness used preventive measures and the possibility to assess potential risks being sportsmen in particular country.

Sports Journalism Content When No Sports Occur: Framing Athletics Amidst the COVID-19 International Pandemic (2021)

On March 11, 2020, the National Basketball Association suspended its season after a player tested positive for COVID-19. Within days, the rest of the sports world similarly suspended play in the wake of the pandemic. This study focuses on sports media storytelling when covering athletic competition was no longer an option. Utilizing four distinct time periods and framing theory as the foundation of our theoretical framework, the content analysis examined shifts from the normal reporting routine and how those shifts morphed as pandemic information dictated.

Immune-boosting role of vitamins D, C, E, zinc, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids: Could they help against COVID-19?

15/02/2021

The world is currently in the grips of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has mutated to allow human-to-human spread. Infection can cause fever, dry cough, fatigue, severe pneumonia, respiratory distress syndrome and in some instances death. COVID-19 affects the immune system by producing a systemic inflammatory response, or cytokine release syndrome. Patients with COVID-19 have shown a high level of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. There are currently no effective anti-SARS-CoV-2 viral drugs or vaccines. COVID-19 disproportionately affects the elderly, both directly, and through a number of significant age-related comorbidities. Undoubtedly, nutrition is a key determinant of maintaining good health. Key dietary components such as vitamins C, D, E, zinc, selenium and the omega 3 fatty acids have well-established immunomodulatory effects, with benefits in infectious disease. Some of these nutrients have also been shown to have a potential role in the management of COVID-19. In this paper, evidence surrounding the role of these dietary components in immunity as well as their specific effect in COVID-19 patients are discussed. In addition, how supplementation of these nutrients may be used as therapeutic modalities potentially to decrease the morbidity and mortality rates of patients with COVID-19 is discussed.

Background
Government responses to managing the COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted the way individuals were able to engage in physical activity. Digital platforms are a promising way to support physical activity levels and may have provided an alternative for people to maintain their activity while at home.

Objective
This study aimed to examine associations between the use of digital platforms and adherence to the physical activity guidelines among Australian adults and adolescents during the COVID-19 stay-at-home restrictions in April and May 2020.

Methods
A national online survey was distributed in May 2020. Participants included 1188 adults (mean age 37.4 years, SD 15.1; 980/1188, 82.5% female) and 963 adolescents (mean age 16.2 years, SD 1.2; 685/963, 71.1% female). Participants reported demographic characteristics, use of digital platforms for physical activity over the previous month, and adherence to moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) and muscle-strengthening exercise (MSE) guidelines. Multilevel logistic regression models examined differences in guideline adherence between those who used digital platforms (ie, users) to support their physical activity compared to those who did not (ie, nonusers).
