As the 2017 academic year begins for The University of the South Pacific (USP), new students excitedly tried to find their way around the main Laucala Campus; some visiting the Campus for the first time.
Anu Devi, a former student of Mahatma Ghandi Memorial School in Suva present at the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE) orientation said she was elated having been on the premises for the first time.
“I have enrolled into my programme and my majors are Accounting and Law. I cannot wait to start as I have always dreamt of this,” she said excitedly.

New students gathered in numbers at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE) orientation at the Australia-Pacific Lecture Theatre at the Laucala Campus in Suva on 31 January 2017.
An introductory video was shown explaining what the Faculty offers in its various Schools including its programmes and courses. The video also showcased other sections of FALE such as the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies (OCACPS), Confucius Institute and Institute of Education.

A physically impaired student of The University of the South Pacific (USP) has commended the University for having a disability-inclusive environment.
Leslie Tikotikoca, a Disability Resource Centre (DRC) student representative who had his right leg amputated following an accident relayed how going to school was tough especially when people stared at him.
Nevertheless he told the students he used that opportunity to persevere so that he could pursue his goals and dreams.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE) successfully held the first day of the University’s 2017 Orientation Week on 30 January 2017.
More than five hundred (500) first year students attended the Orientation at the Australia Pacific Lecture Theatres at USP’s Laucala Campus.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) launched its Orientation week at the Laucala Campus on 30 January 2017 with Fiji’s Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts and National Archives of Fiji, Honourable Dr Mahendra Reddy being chief guest.
Professor Richard Coll, Acting Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Learning, Teaching and Student Services welcomed and congratulated the students for choosing USP as the University of their choice for higher education.

Fiji’s Minister of Education, Heritage & Arts and National Archives of Fiji, Dr Mahendra Reddy will be officially opening The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Orientation Week for its first-year students at the Laucala Campus on 30 January 2017.
An annual event in USP’s calendar, Orientation Week is designed to help new students transition into university life. This year’s event will see more than 3,500 first-year students gather at Laucala Campus from 30 January to 4 February.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE) officially unveiled its face-to-face Science Programmes in Tonga on 16 January 2017 at the Lopaukamea II Hall at USP’s Tonga Campus.
More than one hundred and fifty (150) students will be undertaking full science programmes, including Bachelor of Science (Marine Science), Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science), and Bachelor of Science (Biology/Chemistry) in the face-to-face mode at USP’s Tonga Campus from Semester 1 this year.

Following a successful first Science Teachers Accelerated Programme (STAP) which ended with the graduation of fifty-one (51) students in November, 2016, Honourable Tuila’epa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, Prime Minister of Samoa launched the second cycle of STAP on 23 January, 2017 at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Alafua Campus.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed during the launch between the Government of Samoa and USP to build on STAP and develop similar programmes to help address academic needs of teachers and other students in Samoa.

In line with the Strategic Plan (2013 -2018), The University of the South Pacific (USP) has merged its College of Foundation Studies and former Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) into a new Pacific TAFE from 2017 to be a unified entity offering Foundation and Skills Programmes.
From 2017, the Foundation and Preliminary programmes are classified in three (3) Colleges namely Arts, Business and Science which will provide clear pathways to students for their destination degree in the relevant faculty.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) has introduced three (3) new programmes to be offered from Semester 1, 2017.
The new programmes are Diploma in Counselling (Level 5), Certificate III in Small Business Development & Management, and Certificate III in Patisserie.
