Mr. Ofa Taukolo, a new graduate from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Tonga Campus relayed how his quest for education was met by people who believed in him, some of who are academics and former staff of USP.
Speaking on behalf of the graduates during the Tonga graduation ceremony on 30 September 2016, Mr Taukolo, who was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in History and Geography, said his journey was long, difficult, and full of uncertainties.

A total of ninety-nine (99) students from five (5) different nationalities graduated from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Tonga Campus on 30 September 2016.
Out of the total, eighty per cent (80%) of the graduates were females and forty-five (45) students graduated from the Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE). One student graduated from the non-member country of Guyana.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) held its first ever Industry Consultation on Short Course Trainings and Global Certifications on 29 September 2016.
This consultation allowed USP to listen to employers’ training needs so that demand driven quality short courses and certifications can be introduced. Representatives from industries also had an opportunity to find out the range of short term trainings that USP has to offer.

Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Education, Heritage and Arts Mr Ioane Tiko officiated at the 2016 Chemical Society of the South Pacific (CSSP) Awards at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus on 1 October.
Since its inception in 1985, CSSP competitions have become very popular in secondary schools and this year, there was an overwhelming response of almost ten thousand (10,000) entrants in the Chemistry (Chem) Quiz competition alone. A first-year Law student of The University of the South Pacific (USP) has successfully completed the world- renowned Hollywood Immersive Programme.
Twenty-year-old Jedidiah Christopher Taylor Mosese was the second Fijian and Pacific Islander to be accepted into the inaugural Hollywood Immersive Dance Programme.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) has announced the appointment of Dr Johann Poinapen to the position of Director at USP’s Institute of Applied Science (IAS).
Dr Johann joined IAS as the Deputy Director in October 2014 and has acted as the Director IAS since January 2015.

The Journalism Programme at The University of the South Pacific (USP) has revived its tradition of having a media conference with the University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Rajesh Chandra.
Professor Chandra welcomed the action on a positive note, stating that he was pleased to have the media conference once again.
He said that journalism students used to have regular media conferences before, however it stopped for a while, but was pleased to note that the tradition has been refreshed by the Head of Journalism programme, Dr Shailendra Singh.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) participated at the inaugural World Tourism Day Fair at Sukuna Park in Suva, Fiji on 27 September, 2016.

There is potential for The University of the South Pacific (USP) to collaborate with the Government of Thailand to set up Pacific Studies programme in Thailand universities.
This idea was part of discussions during a visit by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand’s Diplomatic Officer, Mr Patchara Ponum to the University on 22 September 2016.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) recently won a tender to train one hundred and twenty-five (125) civil servants from Solomon Islands in Certificate IV in Project Management Practice in Honiara.
The programme is designed for project team members working under the overall direction of the project manager. It qualifies individuals who apply a broad range of specialised knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts to undertake skilled work and as a pathway for further learning.
