The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Geography, Earth Science and Environment (SGESE) mourns the passing away of Mr Asakaia Balawa Mudunasolevu, a marine conservation champion and long-serving part-time USP employee, research associate, fieldtrip resource person and friend and mentor to staff, students and local and overseas scientists and conservationists for almost 20 years. The Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) of The University of the South Pacific (USP) hosted the launch of a book titled, Forgotten Struggles of Fiji Girmit on 12 May 2017 at its Workforce Development Training Unit in Walu Bay, Suva. The book, authored by Honourable Dr Brij Lal, brings back the forgotten memories of Girmit and stories associated with Girmit in Fiji. A new landmark in the form of a wooden tamtam now stands in front of the Research Office at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus in Fiji. The tamtam was unveiled on 15 May, 2017 in a ceremony officiated by staff of the Research Office led by Professor Derrick Armstrong, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Innovation and International, representatives from the Vanuatu High Commission and students of Vanuatu. A recent research colloquium at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) brought together cross-School and Faculty members, as well as industry representatives to discuss two ongoing postgraduate research projects.
