Australia reiterates its fight against climate change - 19 Jan 2019 02:50:01 pm
Australian Prime Minister Honourable Scott Morrison has reiterated its support for the Pacific in the fight against climate change.
He made the remarks during his first visit to The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus on 18 January 2018.
Australia he stated, is not a remote observer of the Pacific.
“The Pacific is our home also and we have a stake in what happens here. So we stand with you as we look to this challenge of climate change, knowing that to succeed we must work together,” he said.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Professor Elisabeth Holland has been elected a fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS).
Distinguished scientists recognised by the AAAS include astronomer Maria Mitchell, inventor Thomas Edison; and computer scientist Grace Hopper (1963). Professor Holland was recognised by the section on Atmospheric and Hydrologic Sciences.

A two-day workshop organised by the office of the Vice-President Regional Campuses and Estates and Infrastructure (RC and EI) of The University of the South Pacific, held a workshop on Quality Management from 10-11 December 2018 at the University’s Statham Campus at Laucala, Suva.
The introductory workshop on “Understanding and Implementing ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality Management System” included Regional Campus Directors and staff of the Estates and Infrastructure Division of the University.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) in collaboration with the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) organised the Pacific Agrihack Lab in Tonga from 3 – 5 December 2018.
Themed as ICTs from Farm to Table the Agrihack Lab promoted and inspired Pacific people to develop new and innovative digital solutions that will impact and improve agribusiness and value chain development.
This is in line with the main goal of the Innov4AgPacific project, which is to promote nutritious food systems in the Pacific Islands.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) sealed the 50th Anniversary Time Capsule during an event to mark its 50th anniversary of existence at the Laucala Campus on 13 December 2018.
Mr Winston Thompson, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council said the time capsule, the size of a small suitcase, will establish what 2018 was like and will be opened in 25 years’ time.
The time capsule is kept in a glass box at the Vice-Chancellor’s foyer with a list of the 50 events that were held to commemorate the anniversary throughout 2018. It contains items that appropriately represe... More »

As part of its 50th Anniversary celebrations, The University of the South Pacific (USP) officially unveiled the USP 50th Anniversary Mural outside the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre at the Laucala Campus on 13 December 2018.
The mural was painted by a team of local artists who were commissioned by the 50th Anniversary Committee.
The artists, Anare Somumu, Lingikoni Vaka’uta, Josaia Mc Namara, Jeke Lagi and William Camakau have titled the mural, “Celebrating the Pacific”, drawn from the 50th Anniversary theme. “Celebrating the Pacific, Shaping its Future”.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) and Australia’s Griffith University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 11 December 2018, for the establishment of the Pacific Water Centre (PWC) at USP.
The Centre will have a vision where Water in Pacific Island countries is managed by locally-trained skilled leaders and workforces to enable sustainable development, including achievement of the water-related Sustainable Development Goals.

Researchers from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Emalus Campus and University of Otago (UO) (New Zealand) organised a weeklong workshop from 19 - 23 November to introduce Ocean Acidification in Vanuatu.
The workshop was funded by The Ocean Foundation from the United States of America, as part of the installation of the Ocean Acidification Monitoring – GOA-ON in Box Kit for the monitoring of acidification levels (pH) in Vanuatu shores.
