A panel discussion to mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3 was jointly organised by the US Embassy in Fiji, The University of the South Pacific (USP) Journalism Programme and the USP Journalism Students Association.
The event,held at the Laucala Campus in Suva, Fiji, led to some lively discussions and interactions with the audience about the evolving state of the media and threats to free speech. .

USP students for Chinese Bridge Competition - 3 May 2017 02:49:41 pm
Two students of The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Confucius Institute (CI) will represent Fiji at the Chinese Bridge Competition next month.
Diana Botei was the winner during the preliminaries at USP’s Confucius Institute at the Laucala Campus on 29 April, 2017 and she will be accompanied by second winner, Archana Pritika Malato for the finals in China in June.
All travel costs including accommodation and air tickets will be paid for by Hanban, the Confucius Institute headquarters in China.

Eleven regional law enforcement officers from the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu attended a workshop facilitated by The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Islands Centre for Public Administration (PICPA) on writing Job Descriptions.
The workshop ran from 1-5 May in Suva and was conducted under the auspices of an agreement with the Australian Federal Police’s Regional Pacific Police Development Programme (PPDP).

Professor Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of the South Pacific (USP) met Dr. Andrew Cleland, Chief Executive of the Royal Society Te Apārangi in Wellington on 26 April 2017.
They discussed the potential for collaboration between the University and the Society in areas of research; publication by Pacific researchers in New Zealand journals, the potential benefits of civil engineering programmes at USP; and the potential for region-wide research collaboration.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), New Zealand, hosted a High Level Consultation (HLC) with The University of the South Pacific (USP) in Wellington on 26 April, 2017.
The HLC with New Zealand is an annual bilateral event to deliberate on strategic level discussions between the two long-standing partners as well as discuss progress and challenges of the University towards the implementation of its Strategic Plan (2013-2018).

The Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of the South Pacific (USP), Professor Rajesh Chandra met Professor Grant Guilford, Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) on 27 April 2017.
The visit presented an opportunity for both institutions to deliberate on the current level of engagement and discuss potential future collaborations between USP and VUW.
VUW, Professor Guildford mentioned that there needs to be more collaborative engagement between the two institutions to enhance the areas of cooperation under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The University of the South Pacific (USP) has been commended for endeavouring to provide the best stage for career and entrepreneurial development.
Honourable Jone Usamate, Minister for Employment, Productivity & Industrial Relations paid tribute to USP while launching the 2017 Entrepreneurial and Career Fair at the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre on 1 May, 2017 at the Laucala Campus in Suva.
He urged employers and organisational representatives to be committed to this initiative by the University and help to provide employment opportunities to USP graduates.

Education Ministry approves ‘Demonstration Schools’ for SOED - 28 Apr 2017 02:40:54 pm
Fiji’s Ministry of Education (MOE) has approved three Demonstration Schools for The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Education (SOED).
Mr Ioane Tiko, Permanent Secretary for Education, Heritage and Arts, met with Professor Govinda Lingam, Head of the SOED and his staff on 26 April 2017 to announce the approval of the new initiative in the preparation of teachers.
The approval was based on a formal request by Professor Lingam to the MOE for three schools near to Laucala campus be used as Demonstration Schools by SOED.

Capacity building initiatives in public service will yield better impact and results if they are properly linked and sequenced, said Mr Parmesh Chand, Director of The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Islands Centre for Public Administration (PICPA).

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) held its inaugural tourism partners meeting in Honiara last month as part of its efforts to strengthen its relationship with industry stakeholders in the Solomon Islands.
The inaugural STHM Tourism Programme Advisory Committee meeting was held at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara. It was attended by industry partners which included Heritage Park Hotel, Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau, Honiara Hotel, and Solomon Islands Strategic Airport Services.
