USP hosts Appathon 2017 - 9 Oct 2017 02:59:59 pm
Microsoft Initiative at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) under the School of Computing, Information and Mathematical Sciences organised the inaugural Appathon event on 30 September 2017.
The event was organised in the form of an application development marathon for the whole day consisting of application building workshop and application development competition.
Around fifty (50) students from various programmes at the Laucala Campus took part in the event.

VC holds second Staff Forum at Laucala Campus - 9 Oct 2017 12:11:34 pm
The University of the South Pacific (USP) held its second Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Forum for the year at the Japan-Pacific ICT Multipurpose Theatre on 6 October, 2017.
USP Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Rajesh Chandra said he regarded the forum as an important part of inclusion and receiving feedback from staff.
“It is a time where staff can raise their concerns and issues and can clarify or ask anything. It becomes even far more important particularly when an institution such as ours, is in a phase of major changes,” he said.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Lautoka Campus once again stepped forward to raise extensive awareness towards fighting Breast Cancer.
In collaboration with the Western Society Group for Cancer, USP’s Lautoka campus launched the Pinktober awareness programme on 5 October, 2017.
Acting Lautoka Campus Director, Ms Siniva Laupepa revealed that USP Lautoka has been playing an important role in creating breast cancer awareness by organising the Pinktober tea for the last two years.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) is co-hosting Fiji’s inaugural Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) first Lead Author Meeting with the Fiji Meteorological Services at Nadi’s Tanoa International Hotel from 2-6 October, 2017.
The IPCC brought together around 100 experts from over 20 countries for the week-long event to begin drafting the Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC).

The University of the South Pacific (USP) participated in the National Climate Week competition organised by the Fiji Government and UNICEF in an effort to assist schools and communities prepare for future natural disasters, such as cyclones, floods or drought.
Dr Lavenia Tiko, lecturer from USP’s School of Education (SOed) was one of the judges in the National Oratory competition along with representatives each from the COP23 Secretariat, UNICEF and the Ministry of Education.

Recent research findings by The University of the South Pacific (USP) reveal there is a high demand for quality Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) programmes, based on the varying socio-cultural contexts of young children, particularly to cater for the different age groups up to age five (5).
The research was the result of a study titled, ‘Towards improving partnership in Education: re-examining the economics of education in general and Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) in particular for Small Islands Developing States (SIDS).’

The University of the South Pacific (USP) engaged with regional scholarship officers for its annual Scholarship Officers and Education Attaché talanoa Session on 29 September 2017 at the University’s Laucala Campus.
The talanoa session which was organised by the Student Administrative Services (SAS), saw thirteen (13) scholarship officers from regional Government countries based in Suva participate in the session.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Cook Islands Campus concluded its Qigong-Baduanjin exercise programme in the Peace Garden adjoining the Campus on 29 September 2017.
The programme ran for four (4) weeks in the first part of Semester 2 as part of the Confucius Classroom’s Chinese culture programme and aimed at development of an energetic and active mind, utilising Qigong and the Chinese medical practice of Baduanjin.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Campus Life Section successfully hosted an awards night for the First Year Experience Buddy Programme on 30 September 2017.
A major highlight of the programme was the 2017 Buddy of the Year Award which was sponsored by Wesptac Banking Corporation and as part of the award, the winner, Nikeel Krishneel Seth will travel to an Australian university in Semester 1, 2018 to get an international student experience and meet with relevant bodies in the university there.
