The 85th Council meeting of The University of the South Pacific (USP) began at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, Fiji on 24 October 2017.
USP Council is the highest decision-making body of the University, and meets twice a year to discuss the affairs of the University. The first meeting of the USP Council is normally held in one of the 11 member countries of USP and the second meeting is always held in Fiji. The two day meeting is chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council, Mr Winston Thompson.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) held atwo-day Visioning Workshop at the Holiday Inn in Suva, Fiji to undertake deliberation on its future and envisioning its strategic positioning in 2024.
This effort was part of its New Strategic Plan 2019-2024 initiative, particularly focused on ascertaining the proposed Vision, Mission, Core Values, Priority Areas and Key Objectives to guide the work of the University over the new two trienniums.

The Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE) at The University of the South Pacific (USP) hosted The Vision Motors - USP Youth Leadership Forum 2017 at the Japan-Pacific ICT Multipurpose Theatre on 29 September 2017.
Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education, in opening the forum, stressed on the evolving nature of leadership styles.
Dr Kedrayate argued for humanity in leadership, propagating that modern day leaders need to empathise with their subordinates.

His Excellency The President of Fiji and Chancellor of The University of the South Pacific (USP) Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony of the model Confucius Institute-USP project at the Laucala Campus on 13 October, 2017.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Education (SOEd) held a Postgraduate Evening for its students at the Lautoka Campus on 6 October, 2017.
Fourteen (14) thesis candidates of the SOEd attended the session and were briefed by Professor Govinda Lingam, Head of School and the Chair of the SOED Research Committee, Dr Jeremy Dorovolomo, and Mr. Adrian Kumar, Postgraduate Officer.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) is currently collaborating with USA’s Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) for their research projects in the Pacific.
Mr Ruben Markward, Emalus Campus Manager, recently welcomed the team to Emalus and expressed his support for their research activities.
He noted that the campus welcomed the opportunity to be involved in their research and that it is fascinating to learn that scientists, through this research, will be able to find out more about past cyclones, dating back thousands of years.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Confucius Institute (CI) celebrated its 5th anniversary and the launch of the CI-USP Association at the Laucala Campus on 12 October, 2017.
Professor Rajesh Chandra Vice-Chancellor and President of USP said the Confucius Institute at USP began operations at the main Laucala Campus in Suva in 2012.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies (OCACPS) team created history when they were declared the winners of the Grand Final of the Facility Services Ltd – Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE) Debate Series 2017.
Held on Friday 13th October at the Australia-Pacific Performance Space at the Laucala Campus, the final marked the conclusion of the FALE Debate Series 2017 which saw the OCACPS team narrowly beating School of Law Team 2, on the currently contentious topic of Electronic ticketing system, the way forward.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Education (SOEd) held its annual screening interviews with potential teacher education students for 2018 on 14 October.
Professor Govinda Lingam, Head of the SOEd welcomed panellists saying the students are those who have completed the first year of their respective degrees and wish to start a concurrent Graduate Certificate in Education.
This Certificate, he explained, which will enable them to teach after graduation.
