The 2017 Forum Economic Minister’s Meeting (FEMM) concluded with a public seminar on ‘Income Inequality in the Pacific’ at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala campus in Suva on 6 April, 2017. The seminar was jointly organised by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and USP.

A team from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Engineering and Physics (SEP) recently installed a solar desalination system on Yanuca Island, in the province of Serua in Fiji.
Yanuca is a small island located in the South West of Deuba, approximately 20 km away from the main island of Viti Levu where there is only one village with thirty nine families (39) and a total population of about two hundred (200) people. The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) has received another international accreditation by the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE) for its Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery programme.
This programme equips graduates with food preparation skills and technical knowledge to enable them to work independently in a commercial kitchen environment.

A meeting to pave the way forward for education in the Region was held at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus between the School of Education (SOEd), Educational Quality & Assessment Programme (EQAP) and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) on 29 March, 2017.

Two academics from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Law recently won a research grant of AUD 7000 from a top Chinese think tank, Guangdong Institute for International Strategies, to fund a research project which examines the development of legal framework for deep-sea mining in South Pacific Island States.

Graduates of The University of the South Pacific (USP) who were conferred with their qualifications on 31 March, 2017 acknowledged the support of their families, lecturers, tutors and peers for successfully completing their studies.

The Fijian language progamme at The University of the South Pacific (USP) will continue to be sustained for the next three years following funding from the ITaukei Trust Fund.
A cheque to support the first quarter and pay for the salaries of the three staff members and flexi school was presented by Mr. Isoa Kaloumaira, Director ITaukei Trust Fund to Dr Akanisi Kedrayate, and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE) on 29 March, 2017.

A senior lecturer at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD) has been selected to be part of the Science and Technology Advisory Group (STAG) at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) from 2017-2018.
Dr Helene Jacot des Combes, who is teaching the Disaster Risk Management course, is excited to be part of an international expert group.

An inaugural orientation session for students in the teacher training programmes at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Education (SOED) was held by the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA) at the Laucala Campus on 21 March, 2017.
