Successful Engineering Day at USP - 24 Oct 2018 12:09:31 pm
The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Engineering (SEP) held its Annual Engineering Day at the Laucala Campus on 17 October 2018.
A total of twenty-four (24) projects were displayed by students undertaking programmes including Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronics) and Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical), which were showcased to industry stakeholders as well as secondary school students from some schools in Suva.
The project was part of final year courses in the Engineering programme, EE/MM 388 and EE/MM399.

A new book, an anthology of Cook Islands short stories and poems, published by USP Press, was launched at USP Cook Islands on 22 October 2018 before a packed audience.
The new book entitled ‘MANA – 50 years of Cook Islands Creative writing in English and Cook Islands Māori’ celebrates the role of Dr Marjorie Crocombe in the ‘first wave of post-colonial writing in the Pacific’.
It also celebrates the 50th Anniversary of USP and the University’s role in supporting Pacific writing and publishing.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) jointly organised an awareness programme on the eve of Global Hand Washing Day on 15 October 2018 at Emalus Campus in Vanuatu.
Bringing together over 60 students, University staff, Government, civil society and private sector representatives, the event aimed to raise awareness on the impacts of unhealthy practices pertained to hand washing.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) launched the Fijian History mobile app, an innovative tool which makes learning History exciting and interactive, at the Laucala Campus on 19 October 2018.
As part of a Centre for Flexible Learning (CFL)-funded project for Technology Use in Learning & Teaching, the mobile app is the outcome of a research project to evaluate the use of a collaborative content curation tool to support online assessments.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Law Team Two (2) came out champions of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education’s (FALE) Debate Series Grand Finale 2018 at the Laucala Campus on 16 October 2018.
School of Law Teams one (1) and 2 bravely fought for a place in the Grand Final where the debate topic was ‘USP should raise the entry requirement mark to 250 out of 400 (Fiji) or equivalent (other countries) for degree studies’.

Thirteen (13) awardees received accredited certifications in Certified International Procurement Professional (CIPP) from The University of the South Pacific (USP), Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE), in an award function held at its Workforce Development Training Unit (WDTU) in Walu Bay, recently.
The certification is accredited by the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM) as meeting the global standard for professional competence in purchasing and supply – the highest standard in procurement education.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) has appointed Professor Prem Misir as Pro-Vice-Chancellor & Professor and Head of School of Public Health for the new Solomon Islands Campus effective from 15 October 2018.
USP is instituting a programme in Public Health to be based in the new Solomon Island (SI) Campus and Professor will prepare for the delivery of this programme in addition to act as Head of the SI campus.
Professor Misir has over 15 years of local and international management, leadership, and higher education experience.

Three students from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) won medals at the Moffat National Salon Culinaire 2018 held at the Fiji National University (FNU) Nadi Campus from 16th to 19th of October.
Rebecca Dass and Sofia Takalaivuna, who are completing a Certificate III in Patisserie (Bakery and Pastry) won silver medals respectively in the Class 2, student category, while Dillon Fihaki who is completing Diploma of Culinary Arts and Management (Level 5) won a bronze medal in the Class 16, open category, which means he was up against full time industry ... Distinguished media academic, Professor David Robie, and two prominent USP Journalism alumni, will be the chief guests at the USP Journalism Student Awards at Laucala campus today.
Organised by The University of the South Pacific Journalism Programme, the event in its 18th-year is the longest running journalism awards in the region. It is the only awards for journalism in Fiji at the moment.

The University of the South Pacific (USP), through its Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE), continues to strengthen its partnership with the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Climate Ready Project.
Under the Letter of Agreement, signed late last year, USP through Pacific TAFE has been able to partner and support the delivery of accredited training and cohort programmes in Project Management to government, private sector and non-government organisation staff in selected Pacific Island Countries (PICs).
