USP unveils mural to mark 50th Anniversary - 14 Dec 2018 02:01:59 pm
As part of its 50th Anniversary celebrations, The University of the South Pacific (USP) officially unveiled the USP 50th Anniversary Mural outside the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre at the Laucala Campus on 13 December 2018.
The mural was painted by a team of local artists who were commissioned by the 50th Anniversary Committee.
The artists, Anare Somumu, Lingikoni Vaka’uta, Josaia Mc Namara, Jeke Lagi and William Camakau have titled the mural, “Celebrating the Pacific”, drawn from the 50th Anniversary theme. “Celebrating the Pacific, Shaping its Future”.

USP and Griffith University to establish the Pacific Water Centre - 13 Dec 2018 01:03:46 pm
The University of the South Pacific (USP) and Australia’s Griffith University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 11 December 2018, for the establishment of the Pacific Water Centre (PWC) at USP.
The Centre will have a vision where Water in Pacific Island countries is managed by locally-trained skilled leaders and workforces to enable sustainable development, including achievement of the water-related Sustainable Development Goals.

USP’S Emalus Campus Introduces Ocean Acidification Monitoring in Vanuatu - 12 Dec 2018 12:27:44 pm
Researchers from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Emalus Campus and University of Otago (UO) (New Zealand) organised a weeklong workshop from 19 - 23 November to introduce Ocean Acidification in Vanuatu.
The workshop was funded by The Ocean Foundation from the United States of America, as part of the installation of the Ocean Acidification Monitoring – GOA-ON in Box Kit for the monitoring of acidification levels (pH) in Vanuatu shores.

93 Graduate at USP’s Alafua Campus in Samoa - 11 Dec 2018 01:44:47 pm
The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Alafua Campus in Samoa had a successful graduation ceremony on 7 December 2018 where ninety three (93) students graduated with certificates, diplomas and degrees.
Fifty four per cent (54%) of those who graduated were women. Sixty nine per cent (69%) of the students graduated with Undergraduate degrees, six per cent (6%) with Professional Diplomas, six per cent (6%) with Postgraduate Diplomas, five per cent (5%) graduated with Masters degrees and thirteen per cent (13%) from Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) Programmes.

A total of 256 students who successfully completed their Foundation studies at The University of South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) were awarded the Certificate in Foundation Studies in Arts, Business and Science at the University’s Laucala Campus on 7 December 2018. Of this number, 62% were females.
The graduates were from Fiji, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and non-member countries of Papua New Guinea and China.

IAS Leads Local Mitigation of Ocean Acidification Project in Fiji - 7 Dec 2018 03:57:19 pm
The Institute of Applied Sciences (IAS) of The University of the South Pacific (USP) was awarded a blue carbon habitat restoration contract to pilot the use of Blue Carbon in local mitigation of Ocean Acidification (OA) in Fiji, in October this year.
The contract which is valued at USD 89,999 is funded by the Ocean Foundation as part of their blue carbon restoration initiative in the Pacific Islands.
Blue carbon refers to the ability of coastal marine ecosystems, such as mangrove forests, sea grass meadows, and saltwater marshlands, to capture carbon dioxide and store quantities... More »

The University of the South Pacific (USP) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) signed a grant agreement valued at USD 78,999 for the development of two (2) human rights defenders courses which will be part of the Diploma in Leadership, Governance and Human Rights (DLGHR) programme at USP.
DLGHR programme was initiated in 2013 at a Diploma level at USP and currently has five (5) core courses. In collaboration with OHCHR and in recognition to improve understanding of defending human rights in the Pacific Island Countries, USP will develop one 200-level and one 300-level course ... More »

“The University of the South Pacific (USP) is not just a product of regionalism, but evidence of the effectiveness of regionalism.”
This was the sentiment expressed by graduate speaker Mr Joel Fangalasuu, who graduated with a Bachelor of Law at the University’s Emalus Campus in Vanuatu on 30 November 2018.
Mr Fangalasuu highlighted that USP is a product of regional cooperation and it has so far been the single most successful regional organisation.

A total of two hundred and thirty four (234) students of The University of the South Pacific (USP) successfully graduated in a ceremony at the Emalus Campus, Vanuatu on 30 November 2018.
Of the total, sixty per cent (60%) graduated with Undergraduate Programmes, fourteen per cent (14%) with Postgraduate Diplomas, five per cent (5%) with Masters Degrees, three per cent (3) with Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diplomas, and eighteen per cent (18%) from Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE).
