Twenty six (26) students of The University of the South Pacific (USP) studying under the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships (AAPS) were recognised for their efforts in an End of Award lunch ceremony held at Pacific Fusion Restaurant, Laucala Campus on 22nd October.
Australia Awards Pacific scholars from Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and Tuvalu were present at the event.

The Association of The University of the South Pacific Staff (AUSPS) Women’s Wing hosted a Pinktober Morning Tea event on 30th October at the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies on Laucala campus, in an effort to create awareness about breast cancer during the month of October and support the important role of Fiji Cancer Society.
AUSPS Women’s Wing, which was formed on 21st August 2018 to address women-related issues in the workplace at USP.

The University of the South Pacific (USP) Kiribati Campus officially hosted its 2019 Open Day on Friday, 27th September at the campus. However, festivals commenced the night before with a social event hosted for the community and secondary schools as a build up to the main event.
The programme for Thursday night involved a pageant contest where contestants representing each faculty and sections of the campus shared information of the University programmes such as: the Continuing and Community Education and the Pacific TAFE. The University of the South (USP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Ministry of Defence and National Security (MODNS) on 29 October, 2019 at the Ministry of Defence Conference Room, New Wing, Level 2, Government Buildings, Suva to enhance the cooperation and coordination in combatting illicit drugs in the country.

Solomon Islands student Rosalie Nongebatu scooped the Fiji Sun premier award for the most outstanding journalism student during the 2019 USP Journalism Awards at Laucala campus in Suva last night, dedicating the recognition to her husband and three children.
Nongebatu also won the Islands Business award for best feature reporting, adding on to her awards from last year’s event for best radio student and co-sharing the best regional reporting.

The Pacific Regional Education Framework (Pac REF) promotes a human rights approach to education, a Regional Symposium on Early Childhood Education & Care in Nadi was informed.
During his presentation on day one of the symposium at the Tanoa International Hotel, Mr Filipe Jitoko, Coordinator PacREF at USP mentioned that the Framework recognises the disadvantages faced by some groups and communities in accessing opportunities to education.

The Regional Early Childhood Education and Care in the Pasifika Talanoa Symposium jointly hosted by The University of the South Pacific (USP) and Monash University was opened by Honourable Rosy Akbar, Fiji’s Minister for Education, Heritage & Arts on 22 October 2019, at the Taboa International Hotel in Nadi.
In his welcome address, Professor Pal Ahluwalia, USP Vice-Chancellor & President especially acknowledged Hon Akbar for agreeing to officiate at the event. He also welcomed participants including staff from USP’s School of Education, the Monash University and the University of New England.

Talks are underway between The University of the South Pacific (USP) and Tuvalu’s Ministry of Education to improve the education system in Tuvalu.
In his recent visit to Tuvalu, Professor Govinda Lingam, Head of the School of Education (SOEd) and Dr Rosiana Lagi, Tuvalu Campus Director met with senior staff of the Tuvalu Ministry of Education including the Prime Minister, Honorable Kausea Natano and Dr Tufoua Panapa, Permanent Secretary for Education.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Tuvalu Campus held its Open Day on Friday 4 October 2019 at the Tulaakiga Hall at the Queen Elizabeth Park, with the theme, “Educate Tuvalu – Resilient Citizens.”
The Open Day was attended by Honorable Ministers and Members of Parliament, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Senior Government officials, upper primary school students from the Seventh Day Adventist Primary School and Nauti Primary School and their teachers including teachers from the Fetuvalu Secondary School and USP Alumni.

Preparations for the 25th Conference of the Parties (COP 25) in Chile at the end of the year is underway at the University of the South Pacific’s main campus in Suva through the Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development’s (PaCE-SD) project.
