Director of the USP Niue Campus Mr Maru Talagi receives the Queen's Relay Baton for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006, from the President of the Niue Island Sports Association and National Olympic Committee (NISANOC) Mr. Des Hip. Mr Hip was part of a delegation led by Mr John Tiernney, Vice President of the Commonwealth Games Oceania Federation, which visited the campus during the Niue leg of the baton relay. In a short ceremony to commemorate the occasion Mr Talagi said that society should not underestimate the role that sports played in education as a vital ingredient in a person’s development. On the same note he added that USP had on offer All-rounder Scholarships for individuals in the region the opportunity to pursue their studies while at the same time receive specialised coaching in his/her chosen sport. Excellence in sports is a major requirement for the scholarship. In response Mr Tiernney said that it was his vision that USP could play a major role in bringing Commonwealth Sports programs closer to the Pacific community. The Queens Relay Baton of these Games is required to pass through all 71 Commonwealth countries prior to the games. This relay will serve as curtain-raiser for the Commonwealth Games and will be a chance to demonstrate the spirit of unity and cooperation amongst all participating nations. The Games will be held in March next year.
