Students help clean the walls at the Lautoka Campus.

Students of the University of the South Pacific’s Lautoka Campus took a few hours break from their daily routine to clean up the Campus on 29 August, 2012.

This was part of USP’s Safe, Clean and Green Campaign that supports the following three concepts:

·    To overcome policy development and implementation of campus life activities in terms of a safe, clean and green campus driven by the values of quality, relevance and sustainability;

·    To promote wide-spread culture of safety, cleanliness, well-being and sustainability of a green campus and all aspects associated with this notion; and

·    To monitor and evaluate the alignment of campus life activities with the associated policies and strategies of the University.

The Acting Campus Director and Manager Continuing and Community Education, Mr Hasmukh Lal said that the Lautoka Campus always strived to participate in campus life activities within its own context.

This year, the students were divided into three teams and they were provided with cleaning agents and equipment to clean up the various areas.

The students and staff who joined in the cleanup campaign showed great spirit of teamwork and enthusiasm as they cleaned, scrubbed, dusted and mopped the different sections and departments and office spaces of the Campus.

Mr Lal explained that the cleanup campaign created a sense of belongingness for staff and students who spent most of their work and study hours at the Campus. He added that it was also an ideal opportunity for students and staff to mingle and interact and work together to do something useful for the Campus.

According to Mr Lal, the appearance of the entire campus was enhanced with additional pot plants and rubbish bins placed in various sections of the building.

The hardworking students and staff were treated to refreshments after the clean-up was completed.
