USP signs collective agreements

Two collective agreements for 2010 - 2012 were signed on 31 October, 2012 between the representatives of the University of the South Pacific’s Management and the Permanent Hourly Paid and Intermediate & Junior Staff Union (PHPIJSU) of the University.

The signed agreements portray the good working relationship between the parties to confidently communicate on issues and reach a mutual understanding for the benefit of the University and the members represented by the Staff Union.

Senior representatives of PHPIJSU including the President, Mr Josefa Wata and the Secretary, Mr Noel Tofinga stated, “this agreement reflects the management’s right to manage and with the Union’s participation it is done with good dialogue, mutual and mature understanding and in good faith. We, as the Union, are willing to work with the management for a better working environment for USP staff in the Fiji campuses.”

The Vice-Chancellor and President of the USP, Professor Rajesh Chandra, highlighted that the success of the University depends on its staff.

“The University is committed to working with the Union on human resource matters to ensure best practices and to achieve the University’s vision of excellence,” he added.

Professor Chandra said that he was pleased with the collaborative and constructive approach taken by the Staff Union and the University Management.
