A special ceremony was hosted by the University of the South Pacific to honour the excellent academic achievements of its outstanding graduates.
A total of 27 recipients were awarded with gold medals and/or cash prizes in 30 different categories. The recipients had to meet the criteria of achieving an accumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of not less than 4.0 to be awarded with a gold medal.
The University community together with sponsors and invited guests, and friends and families of the awardees, gathered to witness this auspicious occasion which was held at the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies in Suva on 3 April, 2013.
“While we are incredibly proud of all USP graduates, this ceremony is being held because you are the best of the best. And that sort of achievement deserves special recognition,” the Vice-Chancellor and President of USP, Professor Rajesh Chandra said in congratulating the awardees.
He said that the honourees had set excellence in their sights and achieved commendable results, which was consistent with the exceptional standards of the University.
As a University operating in a challenging global environment, Professor Chandra said, USP is very aware that its reputation is built and maintained on the performance of its students, and on the skills and attributes that they bring to the workplace.
“What makes USP special is the extent to which our students shape the learning environment, making it exciting, challenging and so much more than just a place to get a degree or qualification. The outstanding learning environment encourages creativity, innovation, and discovery, and equips USP students with the confidence that they need, as graduates, to contribute meaningfully to the workplace,” he added.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the awardees to continue to persevere and to aim high, and reminded them to keep USP in their sights.
“We are aiming to transform USP into an institution of excellence by its 50th anniversary in 2018, and we need bright young alumni, such as yourselves, to provide input,” he stated.
Professor Chandra thanked the sponsors for supporting the University and called on the sponsors to continue to show the same support in the future.
The medals and prizes were handed out by the USP Chancellor, Ulu-o-Tokelau, His Excellency Aliki Faipule Salesio Lui, together with the sponsors of the various categories.
The Medals and Prizes ceremony is an annual event of the University held before the Laucala Campus Graduation.
