Workshop participants at work, printing designs from the press

The Gallery of Oceanian Art at the University of the South Pacific showcased the fine works of art by the participants of a Printmaking workshop yesterday afternoon.

Nine participants were presented with Certificates of Participation after the week-long workshop at the gallery. It was the second print workshop held at the University, the first being held in last year May.

The workshops are a result of a partnership between the University’s Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies (OCACPS) and the Australian Print Making Workshop (APW).

Workshop facilitator, Martin King said the purpose of the workshop was to bring awareness about the printmaking processes, and to generate new, and high quality work, for sale.

“It was basically training on how to do print making. The artists have worked tirelessly to create these prints, and this workshop has helped expand the artists’ skills,” he said.

He said the workshop was partly training and partly developmental, as they worked with some artists from the previous workshop as well as to see new talent.

King said they were hoping to have more workshops, not just at the University’s Laucala Campus but in other parts of the Pacific region.

“USP has been the hub. We have been able to get more people interested in printmaking and this is an achievement.”

“The workshop has been really successful, with over 300 high quality works that have been produced,” King added.

The first workshop was held at the Laucala Campus in May, 2012.

The workshop focused on three different methods of print making: Lino-cut, Drypoint on Perspex and Monotype.

King said there will be two exhibitions- one in July in Fiji, and another the following month in Melbourne.
Two of the print-making participants have been selected to attend a further workshop sponsored by APW in Melbourne in August.

They will also attend the APW Melbourne Exhibition.
