USP installs its 20th Chancellor, His Majesty, King Tupou VI

The University of the South Pacific formally installed the King of Tonga, His Majesty, King Tupou VI, as its 20th Chancellor at its graduation ceremony in Nuku’alofa, Tonga on Friday, 26 July, 2013.

The University of the South Pacific formally installed the King of Tonga, His Majesty, King Tupou VI, as its 20th Chancellor at its graduation ceremony in Nuku’alofa, Tonga on Friday, 26 July, 2013.

The Vice-Chancellor and President of USP, Professor Rajesh Chandra warmly welcomed the new Chancellor to the USP community, saying it was a historic and memorable occasion for the people of Tonga and the University.

“The formal installation this morning of His Majesty King Tupou VI (Sixth) as the 20th Chancellor of the University continues the tradition of USP Chancellors who are persons of distinction throughout the South Pacific region, including His Late Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou the IV (Fourth) as the University's first Chancellor,” he said.
 
Professor Chandra said that the new Chancellor’s appointment and installation truly demonstrates the regional character of the University and its importance to all its member countries, large and small.

Professor Chandra extended USP staff and students’ congratulations, saying that the University community is humbled by His Majesty’s acceptance of the role.

The new Chancellor, as the titular head of the University, conferred certificates, diplomas and degrees to over 160 students at the graduation ceremony.

His Majesty takes over from the former Chancellor, the Ulu-o-Tokelau, His Excellency, Aliki Faipule Kerisiano Kalolo.
