The University of the South Pacific formally received automated timetabling software from the Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE) today.

USP Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rajesh Chandra formally acknowledged the efforts of FSTE at the handover of the software.
He said that the University has been struggling for a long time and needed automated timetabling software.

"We are fortunate that with the combined efforts of the Dean, Dr. Anjeela Jokhan, Software Developers Harsh Saini and Kaylash Chaudhary we have got to a point where we can now have our very own developed timetabling software," he added.

Mr. Kaylash Chaudhary said that work on the Timetabling software started in Semester 1, 2012 and had been used from Semester 2, 2012. He added that Harsh was currently working on version 2 of the software which will include exam timetabling as well.

Professor Chandra said that this semester showcased the benefits of the timetable which has been modified to produce what we want.
He said that this in- house development has provided the university with a considerable financial relief because comparable software could cost up to $100,000. 00 with additional costs on the licensing fees.

One of the problems with in- house development is lack of documentation which was the first thing that the Vice-Chancellor had requested from Mr. Saini who has compiled the documentation.

"This software is not only useful and saves us money but also gives us confidence that our own graduates can program well and produce software," he added. He further hopes that there will be more development in this area.

The Vice-Chancellor said the University encourages in house development and thanked the Dean FSTE for taking responsibility for the project and also thanked Harsh and Kaylash for their efforts.
