The Chemical Society of the South Pacific (CSSP) launched an innovative activity for secondary school students on Saturday, the 14th of September at the University of the South Pacific (USP). Invitations were sent to schools along the Suva and Nausori corridor with the anticipation of the challenge to participate in this innovative competition being accepted by their students.
A total of 15 schools (45 students) accepted the challenge and confirmed their participation in the competition. The “Bio-battle” incorporated questions relating to the theory and the laboratory activities of the secondary education curriculum. Students, teachers and parents, provided overwhelming positive feedback on the competition and indicated their enthusiasm to participate the following year and their aspiration that the competition would be held on a national level.
According to the President of CSSP, Dr. David Rohindra, the response from the students was overwhelming. He noted that amongst the positive responses from students, were remarks such as “Bio battle is an excellent competition compelling students to study ‘out of the box’. It also develops team laying abilities. A great experience” and, “Bio battle was really great for me as a form 5 student since I learnt a lot of things. It is really great to know that the Chemical Society of the South Pacific (CSSP) is providing such great competitions to prepare students for future exams”.
The competition took place over an hour, and students were asked to answer as many questions as possible as a team. Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School, was announced as the winner, the second place went to Yat Sen Secondary, and the third went to Suva Muslim College. These schools will be receiving their prizes during the society’s award day to be held on the 12th of October 2013 at the University of the South Pacific.
The coordinator of Bio-battle, Ms Komal Shandil said that the underlying objectives of such competitions include the promotion of healthy development in teamwork and assisting students to make successful decisions for further education.
This activity was partly sponsored by The Faculty of Science Technology and Environment (FSTE) of USP and the Laucala Bay Pharmacy.
