The Office of the Vice-Chancellor of The University of the South Pacific (USP) hosted a cocktail reception to acknowledge the efforts of the University’s student leadership team.
The cocktail, which was held at USP’s Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies, saw the participation of student leaders from USP Students Association, representatives of the Laucala Campus Students Association (USPSA Laucala), and representatives of the regional and cultural student associations.
Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Rajesh Chandra expressed his gratitude to the student leaders, and especially thanked the President of USPSA Laucala, Henry Bill for working with other student associations to contribute positively toward University affairs.
Professor Chandra said that members of the student bodies sacrifice their personal gain by working harder on their assignments when preparing for their events so that they could deliver something that everyone around the University appreciates.
“We acknowledge your work and collaboration and we want to work very closely with student leaders because we have to build the University around satisfying students. The front and centre of all our activities are students so let’s work together,” he added.
Professor Chandra also stated that students have shown as much commitment to the University’s Strategic Plan (2013-2018) as the staff, adding that the student associations have aligned their own constitution and activities to the Strategic Plan, which is remarkable.
“I am very happy to be leading a University with such mature students and students who are committed to what the University stands for,” Professor Chandra said.
President of USPSA Laucala, Henry Bill said that it was a proud moment for USPSA Laucala to note that it has contributed to an environment conducive to learning at the University.
This, he added, would not be possible without the collaborative support of Professor Rajesh Chandra and his Senior Management Team (SMT).
"We as students are fortunate to have such committed and understanding SMT and we thank you all for that. Your leadership is commendable and appreciated by the student bodies here at USP,” Henry added.
Henry said that his association's commitment does not end with the student members in Laucala campus.
"Following the devastating impact of TC Winston, the association has engaged in various ways to help raise funds for the victims," Henry said.
He further said that events such as the cocktail reception serves as a motivation for student leaders to contribute in a bigger way to the University and similar events in future will attract more students.
USPSA Laucala plays a key role in getting the students engaged in major University events including, Orientation week, USP Open Day and social and cultural nights.
Support services staff including USP Campus Life, Careers Centre, Information and Technology Services and Security were also present at the cocktail reception.
