University Students meet Kiribati Minister for Education

I-Kiribati students studying at tertiary institutions in Fiji hosted a dinner to welcome the new Kiribati Minister for Education, Honourable Alexander Teabo on 21 May 2016.

The event also served as semester one farewell for i-Kiribati students studying at The University of the South Pacific (USP), as they near their final examination.

Speaking at the event organised at the Kiribati High Commission in Suva, Honourable Teabo said that the new Kiribati Government considers it important to visit i-Kiribati students who are studying overseas.

The new government has approved an allocation of $22 million for the Ministry of Education which is the largest allocation in the annual budget for Kiribati.

Honourable Teabo highlighted that his Government has approved full payment of school fees for students who passed national examinations and Kiribati National Certificate to enable students to attain higher education.

“For scholarships, I am happy to mention that those students who passed should get scholarship and those who wish to pursue studies privately, there is a loan scheme available for them,” he added.

Honourable Teabo told USP students that issues raised by them has been delivered to the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University and other Council members for their consideration and decisions, during the 82nd USP Council Meeting in Samoa.

Honourable Teabo challenged the students to strive for excellence in their studies so that Kiribati can be a place for wisdom and knowledge.
