The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Records Management office is celebrating International Archives Day 2016 and embracing this year’s theme of Archives, Harmony and Friendship through collaborative work with the National Archives of Fiji and USP colleagues.
International Archives Day was established to commemorate the establishment on June 9, 1948 of the International Council on Archives, based in Paris - an NGO aimed at promoting access to the global archives.
On this day archives around the world remind us of their mission and the importance of the collective memory of nations and societies.
Manager Records Management Jason Flello said his team spent the day with colleagues, sharing ideas and knowledge and learning skills, to secure the University’s own significant records assets.
“The University’s archive preserves administrative, legal, financial and historical records for their enduring value and significance, ensuring that the milestones of the Pacific’s only regional tertiary institution are recorded and preserved for later generations,” Mr Flello said.
Later this year the International Council on Archives will hold its quadrennial international congress in Seoul.
Delegates will hear Mr Flello describe the friendships created with colleagues, both here and overseas, that will inform the development of the University’s own archive, ready to celebrate the University’s 50th anniversary in 2018.
