Three students from The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Lautoka Campus have secured a life time opportunity to visit China.
USP Lautoka’s Confucius Institute advance level students Manasa Vakalalabure, Mere Vuda and Pritika Archana have been awarded a four week scholarship to further their knowledge about the Chinese language.
The trio will be in Beijing from 14 December 2016 to 14 January 2017.
Career accountant Ms Archana said she was excited about going and learning more about the Chinese language.
She stated that being selected out of 200 applicants from all over the world is a major achievement in itself.
“To apply for this scholarship, we had to do the International Chinese Test first which was definitely a very difficult examination,” she explained.
“I now feel that my decision to undertake the Chinese language course here at USP Lautoka Campus since 2014 has been very rewarding.”
She noted that the course is a real challenge at Beginners Level but once a student progresses with dedication, the next level can become very exciting.
Another recipient, Mr Vakalalabure has also been selected to represent Fiji at the 15th Chinese Bridge Competition in China from 9 July to 9 August this year.
After an intensive local competition, he succeeded with two other students from the Laucala Campus for the Beijing meet next month.
An elated Mr Vakalalabure said it is a dream come true for him to visit China twice in a year.
The 20-year-old law student said his quest to learn a new language encouraged him to undertake the Chinese language course when it was initiated at the Lautoka Campus in 2014.
“I never knew then that totally new and exciting opportunities were waiting for me and 2016 has really come as a blessing in disguise. I am really looking forward to my two visits to China this year,” he said.
