On the Job Programme Delivery

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) launched the cohort-based Diploma in Business Management programme at Shangri-La Fijian Resort on 17 March 2017.

The programme is designed for individuals who wish to develop their knowledge and competencies in order to become more valuable in their current positions or gain promotion to work in supervisory and/or management positions across a range of business and organisational environments.

According to Mr Hasmukh Lal, Director, Pacific TAFE, this is the first ever on the job delivery of any approved programme of USP.

Previously, on-the-job training and professional development courses were done for short courses for a couple of days, but not for full programmes.

“We will offer an approved qualification of USP on-the-job and you are the first cohort in the region to undergo this training. Once you graduate successfully, you will be pioneers and will also be our brand ambassadors to promote our programme to the networks you are associated with,” Mr Lal told the new students.

He thanked the Training Manager of Shangri-La Fijian Resort for taking leadership in terms of organising the cohort.

The University had previously rolled out cohort model on campus, but as part of this cohort model, Pacific TAFE will be going to the students to deliver the programme.

Mr Lal said this is a more responsive and convenient approach for working people that USP has embarked on.

He told the students that the qualification they will receive is a regional one, adding that, “USP is renowned for its quality, so there is very strong quality assurance system that we have for any programme.”

This programme, he said, is one of the most successful programmes of USP where more than 500 people have graduated to date.

These programmes will also give students the opportunity for previous learning that they have done to redefine those learning.

Some of the courses that students will be undergoing in this programme are:

  • Business ethics and leadership;
  • Strategic planning;
  • People management;
  • Project management; and
  • Business communication.

For student, Rigamoto Seforana, being enrolled in the programme is a dream come true. He said that most of the working students have very minimum education who also have dreams of enhancing them.

“Being part of this programme is an open door to a better future. Being able to enhance our knowledge in terms of education, and being qualified is an achievement in itself,” he said.

Mr Seforana added that, “instead of students going out to the campus, it is them reaching out to us and it makes life more convenient, especially for those who are already in the workforce.”

Ms Sera Baleidrokadroka said that being part of this programme has made her realise that there is a lot of potential in her, which will steer her towards a different dimension.

She thanked the University for bringing the programme to her doorstep. “USP coming to us just shows that they care for us working people who want to upgrade our qualification,” Ms Baleidrokdroka said.
