The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) held its inaugural tourism partners meeting in Honiara last month as part of its efforts to strengthen its relationship with industry stakeholders in the Solomon Islands.

The inaugural STHM Tourism Programme Advisory Committee meeting was held at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara. It was attended by industry partners which included Heritage Park Hotel, Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau, Honiara Hotel, and Solomon Islands Strategic Airport Services.

Professor Marcus Stephenson, Head of School said that the meeting marked an important milestone in the STHM’s strategic efforts to build strong relationships with its industry partners in the Solomon Islands, whose students provided the second biggest cohort of its current student population, after Fiji.

“Given the nature of our Pacific and global tourism industry, it is vital for our school to develop strong and dynamic partnerships with our industry partners as this provides us with a platform to ensure our teaching and learning outcomes are relevant and appropriate to tourism industry needs”.

The School’s Ms Ilisapeci Matatolu, who proactively assists in strengthening industry partnerships, added that these linkages are critical as it provides an opportunity for the industry to be engaged in providing feedback to the School in terms of its human resource needs, including internship, attachment and employment opportunities.

“The school’s Tourism Programme Advisory Committee platform, which has been successfully established in Nadi and Suva, is held twice a year and the objective is to spread the ‘educational model concerning the interface between the tourism industry and academic interface throughout the South Pacific”, said Professor Stephenson.

Mr Sanjay Bhargava, the General Manager of Heritage Park Hotel was appointed Chair of the Committee.  Heritage Park Hotel has close links with Fiji’s Grand Pacific Hotel.
