USP farewells Outgoing Japanese Ambassador

H.E Takuji Hanatani, outgoing Japanese Ambassador and Professor Rajesh Chandra, USP Vice-Chancellor and President with Senior Management Team during the farewell.

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Vice-Chancellor and President hosted a farewell for the outgoing Japanese Ambassador, His Excellency Takuji Hanatani at USP’s Laucala Campus on 4 May 2017.

H.E Hanatani served as the Ambassador of Japan to Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu and Vanuatu from 2014 – 2017.

Professor Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President thanked H.E Hanatani for Japan’s contributions during his term and added that Japan has for a long time been a major development partner of USP.

A major contribution during H.E Hanatani’s term was the rounds of Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) projects.

Other partnerships, Professor Chandra mentioned were volunteers for marine studies programme and rehabilitation of USPNet.

The Vice-Chancellor and President expressed his pleasure working with the Embassy of Japan and wished the Ambassador well as he returns to Tokyo.

H.E Hanatani thanked USP for being the implementing agency of the JENESYS projects and other scholarships and training programmes to promote Japan in the South Pacific countries.

“You have helped in the promotion of our partnerships and I hope this will continue and strengthen in the future,” H.E Hanatani said.

The outgoing Ambassador said JICA hopes to meet the deadline for the rehabilitation of USPNet hub at Laucala by USP’s 50th Anniversary in 2018.

Talking about Fiji, H.E Hanatani said that he enjoyed the pristine nature and the warm hospitality of the people and wishes to return to the Pacific countries as a tourist in future.

H.E Hanatani joined the Japanese Foreign Service in 1979 and has served at Japan’s diplomatic establishments including positions such as Counsellor in Embassy of Japan in Kenya, Minister in Embassy of Japan in Belgium and Consul-General of Japan in Atlanta and the Unites States. 

The farewell was attended by members of the University’s Senior Management Team and other senior staff of the University.
