The 84th Council meeting of The University of the South Pacific (USP) will be held at USP’s Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) Long Island Campus, in Majuro from 24 - 25 May 2017.
USP Council is the highest decision-making body of the University, and meets twice a year to discuss the affairs of the University.
The two-day meeting will be chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council, Mr Winston Thompson. The meeting will be opened by Her Excellency Dr Hilda Heine, President of RMI.
H.E Dr Heine would also be officially opening the new RMI Long Island Campus on 23 May, 2017. The University carried out renovations to the Long Island Hotel acquired from the Government of RMI for a new Campus.
On the same evening, the RMI Campus will have its Graduation ceremony which will see a total of forty-six (46) students graduate. The USP Chancellor and Prime Minister of Cook Islands, Honourable Henry Puna, will be conferring these graduands with their certificates and degrees as part of the ceremony.
On day two (25 May) of the meeting, members of the USP Council will confirm the final text of the USP Convention before opening it up for signature.
Seven countries have confirmed they will sign the USP Convention at the Council meeting.
The formal signing of the USP Convention will strengthen the legal status and operation of the University in each of the member countries.
The 84th meeting of the USP Council will conclude with a formal dinner to be hosted by Mr Winston Thompson, Pro-Chancellor & Chair of USP Council, and Professor Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President.
