The late President of Vanuatu His Excellency Womtelo Reverend Baldwin Lonsdale.
The University of the South Pacific (USP) is deeply saddened by the sudden passing away of His Excellency Womtelo Reverend Baldwin Lonsdale, the President of Vanuatu.
On behalf of the University, Acting Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Derrick Armstrong extended their heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the Government and people of Vanuatu, and H.E. Lonsdale’s family and friends.
H.E. Lonsdale served as the 22nd Chancellor of USP for a period of one year from July 2015- June 2016 and the University is grateful for his services during this term which he served with distinction.
“H.E. Lonsdale’s chancellorship was inspiring and we admire the passion with which he advocated for the University,” Professor Armstrong said.
H.E. Lonsdale had strong leadership and integrity which he brought to his office.
Professor Armstrong said that everyone in the region who followed developments in Vanuatu in the past years have the highest regard and admiration for the way H.E. Lonsdale led and made decisions for his country, especially during trying times.
The late President was instrumental in mobilising the rehabilitation efforts in Vanuatu after Cyclone Pam and was a champion of anti-corruption initiatives in Vanuatu.
He will always be remembered for his transparent and accountable leadership.
H.E Lonsdale, who was the eight President of Vanuatu, was elected in September 2014, the first from Torba Province.
