The University of the South Pacific (USP) was part of a two-day Government roadshow held at Natadra District School grounds in Saqani, Cakaudrove Province on Fiji’s second largest island of Vanua Levu from 22-23 June, 2017.

Dr Samuela Bogitini, USP Campus Director, two staff from the Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment and Savusavu Centre Supervisor joined government officials and the Prime Minister Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama at the roadshow to showcase USP’s programmes and courses.

The Prime Minister opened the show with about three hundred (300) civil servants and two Government ministers present.  The roadshow was an initiative of the Fijian Government as a platform to share information to rural dwellers on how they can better access Government services like financial information, medical, housing, agricultural, education, environmental, citizen’s education, law and social welfare.

The targeted audience were the three districts of Saqani, Tawake and Vaturova, where there were a total of 15 primary and secondary schools students visiting the respective booths.

According to Dr Bogitini, the Hon. Prime Minster took time to visit the USP booth querying about the University’s services at the Laucala and Labasa Campuses and whether students in the rural areas were able to access the University’s programmes.

Dr Bogitini reassured PM Bainimarama that USP is fully aware of the needs of rural students, and that its programmes are flexible enough to cater for their academic needs. This he added would allow them to pursue their desired higher qualifications and study needs while at the same time enjoying the comfort of studying from their homes and with their families.

“With the various learning modes, and flexibility of study for the University’s current, prospective, and resuming students, it makes USP an ideal and unique higher learning provider for our nation and allows students to have more access to a quality, and remarkable University study experience with its reputable and marketable qualifications,” Dr Bogitini added.

“USP is also able to invest in learning methods that will make learning viable and accessible for any student whether they are learning from the comforts of their urban dwellings, or whether they are enjoying the breeze on the white sandy beaches of a rural coastal area uploading an assignment; learning must be inclusive as per the priority areas of the University’s Strategic plan 2013- 2018,” he noted.

He stated that Government officials and members of the public present at the roadshow vouched for USP being the premier institute of higher learning in Fiji and the region.
