The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala Campus hosted a Post-Open Day Cocktail on 18 August, 2017 to acknowledge the hard work of the Open Day Organising Committee, facilities and sections, student ambassadors, sponsors, media, television hosts and other stakeholders for making the 2017 Open Day a success.
Director Development, Marketing, Communications and Alumni Mr Jaindra Karan said a total of 86 schools visited the Laucala Campus, 34 to Lautoka Campus and 24 schools to Labasa Campus.
The Laucala Campus he said saw a total of 10,000 students visiting on the Open Day with Lautoka and Labasa campuses registering approximately 3000, and 2000 students respectively.
He said this year’s Open Day is by far one of the best and acknowledged everyone for their contribution to make it a success.
He specifically thanked members of the Organising Committee, Staff of Faculty, Schools and Sections for their set up, Oceania Centre and USP Student Associations for the cultural performances, Student Ambassadors, sponsors, TV hosts and his staff at the DMCA office.
“This year the event, one of the biggest in our calender was a very well organised one and I have received very positive comments,” he said.
Mr Winston Thompson, Pro-Chancellor acknowledged the effort by everyone saying its organisation was not only inspiring but impressive.
“It is a credit to all of those who took part and especially the student ambassadors who did such a good job of it that anyone who saw it either here on that day or on TV had to be impressed,” Mr Thompson said.
He also related to personally experiencing such events at universities in the United States saying that “we can hold our heads up high against those well-resourced universities because I believe we did wonderfully”.

As for the annual Faculty/Support services display competition, the four awards were:
The winners were judged based on the following criteria:
Reflection of and relevance to the Open Day theme;
Information – access, readiness to assist and answer questions;
Effort – how people were welcomed to the booths, how the crowd was handled and visibility of academic staff;
Attractiveness – appeal, content flow, how many people were attracted to the displays at different times; and
Innovation – creativeness of the displays, new/unusual elements if the departments were combined.
Media partners for the event were Fiji TV and Fiji Sun while the major sponsors were Westpac Bank, Coco- Cola, TFL, Formscaff, Vinod Patel, BSP Bank, Vodafone and USP Book Centre.
In-kind sponsors included Star Printery, Printhouse, Bred Bank, United Apparel, Office Products, Kriz Signs, Damodar Event Cinemas, DATEC (Fiji) Limited, GEM (Fiji) Limited, LAN Cabling Limited and GEM Office Products.
