The University of the South Pacific Staff Football Club (USPSFC) won the inaugural Inter-Tertiary Staff Football Competition held at the Central College grounds in Lautoka on 28 October 2017.

The tournament, hosted by The University of Fiji (UOF), had participation from USP, Fiji National University (FNU) and the hosts. The tourney followed the round-robin format, whereby all three (3) participating teams played against each other and competed for highest points.

USP came out victorious against both UOF and FNU, while final match of the day between UOF and FNU resulted in a draw. UOF were overall runners-up in the competition on a goal average basis.

As part of the formal programme, Mr Tarunesh Reddy Chief Guest and Vice-President of Fiji Football Association (FFA) applauded the effort by the three (3) universities and encouraged continuation of such initiatives in the future as it promoted a healthy relationship between each institution.

He added that FFA promoted such constructive activities at community levels and would be pleased to support it in the future.

In addition to the main awards, there were incentives for other categories such as the Best Player; Most Disciplined Team and the Best Dressed Team.

As judged by the Chief Guest, the Best Dressed Team was awarded to UOF and they also received the award for the Most Disciplined Team.

The award for the Best Player of the competition was won by USP’s Deepal Singh, who was also the highest goal scorer.

In order to give a formal structure and continuity to this value-adding initiative between the higher education institutes, it was communally agreed that an Association be formed that would provide oversight on the organisation of such a competition on an annual basis.

It was agreed that the tripartite body be known as the Inter-Tertiary Staff Football Association (ITSFA) that will have office bearers including a President, three Vice-Presidents, Secretary and a Treasurer. The President role will be rotated on an annual basis as the host for the competition changes hands.

The three participating teams decided that for the initial year, the following University representatives will form part of the ITSFA:

President:                    Mr Ravineet Sami, UOF

Vice-President 1:        Mr Iresh Lal, USP

Vice-President 2:        Mr Amit Prakash, UOF

Vice-President 3:        Mr Nikleshwar Datt, FNU

Secretary:                    Dr Navneel Prasad, UOF

Treasurer:                    Mr Mohammed Shah, USP

USPSFC President, Mr Iresh Lal thanked UOF for being exceptional hosts and said that “the competition was a successful one and in an essence, a source of building a friendly relationship between staff of the three Universities and creating a sense of networking.”

He added that UOF has done great in hosting the inaugural competition and has set high precedence for the next University to host tournaments.

He thanked the Vice-Chancellor and President of USP and Members of the USPSFC and its Executive Committee for their continuous support and encouragement in making it possible for the University to participate in this tournament and other engagements.

USP will be hosting the next Inter-Tertiary Staff competition with an inclination to include more sports like volleyball and netball with a view to encouraging participation from female staff of the respective Universities.

The ITSFA will be primarily responsible for coordinating and organising the next Inter-Tertiary Staff Competitions and mobilising resources to support these efforts.
