The University of the South Pacific (USP) hosted a successful WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) Mock Seeking Accreditation Visit (SAV) from 13 to 16 November 2017 in preparation for the Seeking Accreditation Visit 1 (SAV1) to be held in April next year.

The Mock Visit Team consisted of four (4) members including; Dr. Denis Meerdink, Associate Dean, University of the Pacific (Chair); Dr. Mike (Ming-Tung) Lee, Vice President for Administration and Business Affairs, California State University, Sacramento; Dr. Mihaela Tanasescu, Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Trident University International; and Professor Keith Roberts, Fulbright Scholar, USP.

The Mock Visit Team met with various members of the USP community, including Mr Winston Thompson, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the Council, Council Members, Members of the Senior Management Team (SMT), Associate Deans, Heads of Schools, Heads and Directors of Sections and Campuses, Assessment Consultant, Academic, Professional, and Intermediate & Junior Staff, and Representatives from USP Students Association (USPSA).

At the completion of the Mock SAV, the Mock Visit Team members provided the SMT with a debrief and highlighted the areas under each Criteria for Review (CFR) in which the University was doing well and provided recommendations for areas that needed improvement.

The USP WSCUC Team and SMT discussed the action plan arising from these recommendations to plan and prepare for the April SAV1.

The recommendations, where appropriate are also being incorporated into the final version of the Institutional Report which will be submitted to WSCUC by 31 January 2018.

Professor Richard Coll, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Learning, Teaching & Student Services who is the University WSCUC Accreditation Liaison Officer commented that the Mock SAV was organised as closely as possible to simulate the actual SAV1, adding that “it has been an excellent opportunity for the University to sharpen and refine its preparation for the SAV1 in April next year.”

Professor Coll further stated that “the Mock SAV has also deepened the understanding that the USP WSCUC Team and University community as a whole has of WSCUC expectations.”

The WSCUC USP Team thanks the SMT, members of the WSCUC Working Groups and the wider University community for its cooperation and support for the preparation for and hosting of a successful Mock SAV.

Professor Coll expressed his particular appreciation to Ms Sujlesh Sharma, Ms Dorothy Spiller, Ms Saileshni Naidu, Ms Maria Ah Sam, Ms Evonne Inia and Mr Deepak Bhartu and added “it is hard to overstate just how much hard work these staff put in, the long hours and dedication they showed was the main reason the Mock SAV was so successful”.
