A pioneer journal of The University of the South Pacific (USP) the Directions: Journal of Educational Studies was re-launched by Professor John Loughran, the Executive Dean, Faculty of Education, Monash University at the Laucala Campus on 18 December 2017.
Professor Loughran was the Chief Guest at the launch hosted by the School of Education (SOED).
Published in 1978, the journal was housed at the Institute of Education and after three decades of its existence the School of Education has now revived the Journal in light of the demands on research and publication.
Professor Loughran stressed that it takes time to get journals re-published and emphasised that academics have the duty to generate new knowledge to the world.
He reiterated that the reason for academics’ existence is to create new knowledge and not simply to replicate what has been done before.
“The publication of the Journal is a wonderful achievement for the School” said Professor Loughran.
He further noted that whatever the ideas are they should be peer reviewed and this process is not necessarily a straightforward one, adding it is crucial to note that rejections are a part of getting research articles published.
Dr Yoko Kanemasu, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education (FALE), remarked that the Directions Journal has a history and congratulated the SOED for having it re-launched.
Dr Kanemasu emphasised the importance of having our own outlets for publication at USP adding that maintaining standards should be a priority.
She stressed that this means having a strong editorial board and a vibrant pool of reviewers. Dr Kanemasu encouraged the SOED to increase the profile of the journal and said this re-launch is a wonderful occasion and acknowledges the foresight in getting the journal re-published.
Professor Govinda Lingam, Head of School and Editor-in-Chief of the Directions Journal mentioned that this is a milestone achievement for the School.
“It is like bringing the dead to life again and staff collaboration has made the re-publication of this journal possible,” said Professor Lingam.
He further mentioned that in 2018 a special edition will be published to mark the USP’s 50th anniversary and also the SOED’s partnership with the Faculty of Education at Monash University will have positive effects on the Journal.
Dr Jeremy Dorovolomo, the Editor of the Journal, mentioned that it is an avenue for publication by USP staff, postgraduate students and others outside of USP.
“It is interesting to note that the current volume of the Journal has four postgraduate students of USP as contributing authors,” he added.
