Marine Science and Fisheries Symposium will be held at the University's Laucala Campus.
The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) School of Marine Studies in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will host a symposium on Marine Science and Fisheries from 29 – 30 January 2018.
The Symposium is organised to commemorate the University’s 50th Anniversary and the School of Marine Studies’ 20th Anniversary this year and will be held at the Japan-Pacific ICT Multipurpose Theatre and ICT Video Conference Room 1 at the Laucala Campus.
The objectives of the Symposium are to further enhance a partnership and network in higher education and research between the School of Marine Studies and Japanese universities and research institutions in marine science and fisheries, and to discuss its future prospect in terms of international cooperation and partnership in the Pacific as well as human resource development.
The symposium has been planned in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 and the forthcoming 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM8) to be hosted by the Government of Japan in Iwaki City from 18-19 May 2018.
The keynote Speaker for the Symposium will be Honourable Mr Semi Koroilavesau, Minister for Fisheries. Other invited guest speakers from Japan include Professor Shunsuke Koshio, Dean of Faculty of Fisheries at Kagoshima University; Professor Hideo Yamasaki, Dean of Faculty of Science, and Head of Graduate School of Engineering and Science at University of the Ryukyus; and Professor Takao Yoshimatsu, who is from the Graduate School of Bio-resources & Assistant President of International Cooperation / Exchange at Mie University in Japan.
