A Project Management workshop was hosted by The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Graduate School of Business (GSB) for project planners, controllers and project team members in the areas of IT, Finance, Legal and Human Resources from 12-13 December, 2017.

Professor Raghuvar Pathak, Head of the GSB said the course, which was also meant for individuals intending to become project managers with no previous experience, was a success.

“Participants received practical and insightful knowledge needed to plan, implement and control a project successfully,” Professor Pathak explained.

He said the workshop introduced participants to effective and simple project management processes and tools, to enable them to proactively and confidently support their projects and start applying what they had learnt in their respective organisations immediately.

“The workshop was tailored for the context of project management Fiji, as per the results of a long-term research of the workshop instructor in Fiji with collaboration with USP,” he explained.

The workshop instructor was Dr Ofer Zwikael, an Associate Professor in the College of Business and Economics at the Australian National University.

Dr Zwikael has worked with USP in Fiji for six years on solving project management problems. This collaboration has involved intensive teaching and research on project management. The workshop will report on findings from these collaborations.

At the end of the workshop, participants understood the role and accountabilities of various project players, the project life cycle, project terminology and basic project management tools and techniques.

Topics covered during the workshop included Project management in Fiji and the South Pacific; Projects and strategy; Project life cycle; Project success; the business case; the project plan; Project scoping; Project scheduling; and Project risk management.

The author of three project management books and more than 150 scholarly peer-reviewed papers published in leading outlets, Dr Zwikael is a Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential holder and has held leadership roles such as Associate Dean, Associate Editor and on Boards of multiple Academic journals.

He has also led, trained, mentored and consulted projects and program groups in dozens of organisations, including Motorola, Nestle, Teva (Israel), PINZ (New Zealand) and Nationwide Bank (UK).
