USP introduces Event APP

Back to News »

USP developed an Event APP for its 2018 Entrepreneurial Fair.

A key feature of The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) weeklong Entrepreneurial Fair from 19-23rd February, 2018 was the introduction of an Event APP, arguably first for Fiji and USP.

Mr Glenn Pope, Campus Life Group Manager confirmed that the APP was specifically designed for the event which was used to disseminate information about the event.

He stated that information disseminated during the week included the main programme, details of the speakers, the YES Programme and interactive maps, among others.

“By using the USP Entrepreneurial Fair 2018 APP, members of the community, students and staff also participated in daily polls and got connected with other participants,” he said.

According to Mr Pope, the University community also participated in daily competitions with prizes; posted photos, messages, liked posts, commented on posts, engaged with speakers, took notes, set reminders and connected socially with other attendees.

“Over 274 people downloaded the APP and followed the weeklong event including Mr Shaheen Ali, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, who posted on the APP a photograph of the Keynote Entrepreneurial speaker,” Mr Pope said.

In addition, the APP assisted in the engagement of the participants during each workshop.

“There is a tendency for most people in general to be quiet during workshops, so the APP was used as a mechanism to engage people during workshops scheduled throughout the week,” Mr Pope said.

Sessions during the week included Mobilizing Resources for your Business Idea – Where to go and who to talk to and Entrepreneurship 101 - Is It Worth the Risk?

Participants were provided information on some funding and grants opportunities currently available through Government, and financial institutions.

It also offered an opportunity to brainstorm about being innovative about mobilising and/or sourcing alternative funding and technical assistance.

Some sessions also mapped out key items for budding entrepreneurs to consider as they start on their business and marketing strategies, networking and seeking business opportunities etc.

The Entrepreneurial Fair was launched by the Honourable Mr Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, Fiji’s Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Land and Mineral Resources at the Laucala Campus and attended by USP staff, Senior Management, students, sponsors, invited guests and workshop participants.
