China’s Tianjin University seeks partnership with USP

Professor Derrick Armstrong, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research & International and Professor Li Jiajun, Chairman of the Tianjin University Council.

A delegation from China’s Tianjin University visited The University of the South Pacific (USP) led by Professor Li Jiajun, Chairman of the Tianjin University Council on 24 April 2018.

Tianjin University (TJU), founded in 1895, is the oldest university in China. As a comprehensive university with distinct strength in engineering, TJU has developed a disciplinary layout that integrates engineering with sciences, management, education, economics, medicine, law, and liberal arts.

Professor Derrick Armstrong, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Innovation & International warmly welcomed the delegation saying they had been looking forward to the visit from Tianjan University.

“It is indeed a great pleasure to welcome you and your colleagues and we are excited about possibilities for collaboration and developing a strong relationship between our universities,” Professor Armstrong said.

Professor Jiajun said, “It is our first time in Fiji and here at USP and we are very honoured and we look forward to our discussions to establish official links and collaboration in the future”.

He also extended an invite to Professor Armstrong to visit Tianjin University.

Formal presentations were made by both Universities in an effort to understand more about each other.

An MOU will be signed by the two universities designed to foster a friendly relationship through mutual cooperation in teaching and research between Tianjin University and USP.

Both universities have agreed on the following areas of cooperation:

1. Exchange of scholarship plans of mutual interest;
2. Pursue faculty and student exchange programmes;
3. Seek exchanges to cultural and artistic activities; and
4. Collaborate on cooperative research and hold joint academic seminars where appropriate.

Also under the agreement, actual projects will be implemented for the realisation of specific exchange activities. The delegation also visited USP’s International Office.
