Mr Winston Thompson, Pro-Chancellor & Chair of Council installing USP's 25th Chancellor H.E Taneti Maamau, the President of the Republic of Kiribati.
The University of the South Pacific (USP) installed its 25th Chancellor, His Excellency Taneti Maamau, the President of the Republic of Kiribati during the Kiribati graduation ceremony on 3 August 2018.
He attended the installation ceremony along with the First Lady Teiraeng Maamau.
Professor Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President warmly welcomed the new Chancellor to the USP family.
“I would like to especially welcome our newly installed 25th Chancellor, H.E. Taneti Maamau, and our alumnus, to this very important occasion,” Professor Chandra said.
Appointed President of Kiribati in March of 2016, H.E. Maamau is a veteran civil servant holding the positions of Deputy Secretary and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Public Service Office, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives. H.E. Maamau was also a member of Parliament (Onotoa) from 2007 to January 2016.
He graduated from USP in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Administration and Sociology; a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Sydney and a Masters of Economic Studies from the University of Queensland.

Member for International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB) and the Asian Development
Originally from the island of Onotoa, he is married to Teiraeng Maamau and they have two children.
The Chancellor is the titular head of the University, who confers the qualifications to the graduates of the University. He will serve his term until June 2019.
The rotation of the position of the Chancellor goes according to alphabetical order among USP’s 12 member countries.
